Italy and France are neighbours, and for a French retail brand the Italian market can look like a natural extension of the home market. The proximity is real, but it can be misleading. Customers, store formats, shopping hours, the role of independent retailers and the expectations about service differ in ways that only become visible once the first stores are open. This checklist covers the research that helps a French brand get the Italian launch right, before opening and in the first months after.
Before opening: understand the competitive field
Benchmark the competitors where you will open. Not the national leaders in the abstract, but the stores your customers will actually compare you with, in the cities you have chosen. Mystery shopping of competitors shows the service standard you will be measured against: how customers are welcomed, how products are presented, how long a purchase takes, how returns are handled. We cover the method in competitive intelligence and benchmarking for Italian market entry.
Check prices as customers see them. The published price and the price customers actually pay are not always the same. Promotions, loyalty schemes and in-store discounts can change the picture, and they vary from one network to another.
Do not assume the regions are alike. Northern, central and southern Italy differ in purchasing power, shopping habits and the weight of independent stores. A launch plan built on one city can mislead the next ones.
Before opening: test the concept with Italian customers
Focus groups and in-depth interviews with Italian customers show how the brand, the range and the communication are perceived before money is spent on the stores. Our Rome facility has a viewing room behind a one-way mirror, a booth for simultaneous interpretation and HD streaming, so a team in Paris can follow the sessions live in French or in English — see how to run focus groups in Italy with international observers.
The first months: measure the new stores
Mystery shopping of the first stores. New stores, new teams and often a franchise or local partner: this is where the brand standard written in France meets everyday reality. Regular visits from the opening weeks show whether the service matches the standard and where training is needed, before habits set in. Our complete guide to mystery shopping in Italy explains how a programme is set up.
Audits of display and compliance. Planograms, visual merchandising, price tags, mandatory information and brand guidelines can be checked store by store with in-store audits, as described in retail audits and in-store compliance checks in Italy.
Listen to customers. Reviews, post-purchase surveys and complaints show how Italian customers judge the new stores in their own words. Collected from the start, they become the baseline for every later comparison — see voice of customer programmes for international retailers in Italy.
Keep Italian results comparable with France
If the brand already measures its French stores, the Italian programme should use the same KPIs, scoring and validation rules, adapted only where the local reality demands it. That way a score in Milan means the same as a score in Lyon. We describe how to do this in multi-country mystery shopping: how to run the Italian leg.
A partner that answers to the French team
For a French brand, the practical question is often who will coordinate the research in Italy and report to the team in France. We work with international brands and with the French consultancies that support them, also white label, and we run fieldwork, validation and translation of the results in Italy, with reports available in French or English.
